Structures and Functions of the KZN Legislature
Every organisation requires office holders who can exercise authority, speak on its behalf, administer its business and serve its members. The same is true of the KZN Legislature. Its functions are divided among elected officers, who are Members of Parliament, and the permanent officers and their staff who are employed for the House. The House elects office bearers in the House.

Members of the Provincial Legislature

Each political party which stands for election, draws up a list of members to represent its electorate in the Provincial Legislature. This is called a party list. The number of seats that a party wins in provincial elections is based on its performance in the election, in accordance with the principles of proportional representation. The seats won by the parties are then allocated to their members according to the party lists. These party members then become Members of the Provincial Legislature.
