KZN Legislature’s Speaker Contributes to Science

By Mbalenhle Buthelezi

KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Speaker Hon Peggy Nkonyeni MPL is making a huge contribution to the improvement in the study of math’s and science through the donation of science kits.

Nkonyeni has donated science kits to various schools and townships including Inanda and Ganges High School. Other areas in various parts of the province are also set to benefit.

“Math’s and Science are important subjects and as we are about to celebrate the second decade of freedom, we wish to have more young people in the crucial fields of Science and Technology” she said during one of her visits at a school in Merebank.

This gesture is part of her Social Responsibility Programme which was established in 2007 whereby the Speaker of the Legislature devotes time and energy to engage directly with the people and understand their concerns and needs.

Ganges High School in Merebank was visited during the last day of the Taking the Legislature to the People (TLTP) programme on the 26th April 2013. Nkonyeni donated science kits and sanitary pads for the female students from poor background in the school.

She also expressed her gratitude and pride with the performance of the school as in 2011 there was a 95 % matric pass rates with the top student attaining 7 A’s.

The KZN Department of Education’s Head of Department (HOD), Dr Nkosinathi Sishi who was also present at the visit said the kits offered by the Speaker would stimulate the results of the learners.

He further stated: “Despite the adverse conditions, this school is resilient and manages to provide quality. However, it would do better with infrastructure assistance, more staffing and resources”.

Although Ganges High School is a school in the township and faces some of the major predicaments existent in high schools such as high pregnancy rate and drugs, the Principal of the school Mr. DG Reddy assured his guests that they do all possible to monitor misbehavior within the premises.

He further highlighted that one of their main issues currently is overcrowding in classrooms and the lack of ablution facilities.

“All your concerns have been noted and will be dealt with accordingly but I personally wish to see the prioritization of ablution facilities. We as the KZN Legislature are only a phone call away” said Nkonyeni.
