Qualified as a teacher at Eshowe College of Education in 1979
Holds a Bachelor of Administration (B.Admin) degree in Public Administration & Politics from the University of Zululand (Durban-Umlazi Campus).
Matriculated at Mqhawe High School at Inanda in 1977.
Career/Membership/Positions/Other Activities :
From 1980 to mid 1984 - taught at Mqhawe High School at Inanda North of Durban downtown
• In September 1984, joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation
• (SABC) as Radio Zulu (now Ukhozi FM) Announcer
• In 1986 moved to SABC's Radio News Department to be a News Presenter and Journalist
• In 1991 promoted to Senior Journalist
• In January 1995 promoted to News Bulletin Production Editor
• September of the same year, promoted to News Editor
• In 1998 appointed to be first Campaign Manager for SA Government AIDS Programme
• In 1999 began serving as Member of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Legislature
• In 2006 appointed to be Member of Executive Council for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (Provincial
Minister) in KZN.
• Recently (in May 2009) elected by the KZN Legislature to be the Deputy Speaker.
Leadership/ Membership Positions:
While at Eshowe College in 1979, appointed to be a delegate for the institution at an International Conference, the South African Christian Leadership Assembly, held in Pretoria
Elected to be Inanda Schools' Zonal Sports Organiser in 1982
Elected in 1982/3 to be the Coach/Manager for the Ndwedwe Schools' Zonal Athletics Union Team, which produced a world renowned athlete, Willie Mtolo.
Was the co-founder and Public Relations Officer of the Friends of Deaf Association.
Elected to serve on the local Street Committee at Inanda Newtown-A which handled problems of the community and the Committee was under the Inanda Residents' Organisation.
Elected to lead the parents' delegation of Umzomusha Public School which met the circuit inspectorate on the shortage of classrooms and other facilities at the school.
Co-founder of the Media Workers' Association of South Africa (MWASA) in SABC's Natal Region.
In 1991 was a member of the first MWASA National Negotiation Team in historical ground-breaking wage and working conditions talks with SABC Management.
Elected to be MWASA chairperson for SABC Natal Plant in 1993-1994.
In 1994 elected as an Executive Committee member of the Natal Cultural Congress.
In the same year became the Treasurer of the Natal Cultural Congress.
Elected as board member for the Durban Arts Association in 1993-1994
Co-founder (with among others, President of South Africa and of the ANC, His Excellency Jacob Zuma) of the Group of Concerned Zulus which went to meet Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini (for his intervention) on political violence that was ravaging Natal in 1993.
In October 1996 was founder member of the South African Editors' Forum (SANEF)

Elected to be Chairperson of Inanda Mission Development Committee in 1997
In 1998 elected as Branch Chair of Inanda Mission African National Congress (ANC)
Elected to be in the ANC Regional Executive Committee of North Durban in 1998.
Elected member of KwaZulu-Natal ANC Provincial Executive Committee in 1998.
Member of the Qadi Tribal Development Committee.
Appointed in 1998 to be Manager of S.A's Campaign Against AIDS. Reported to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on AIDS chaired by then Deputy President Thabo Mbeki.
Elected to be ANC Member of Provincial Legislature in KwaZulu-Natal in 1999
In August 1999 appointed by KwaZulu-Natal ANC leadership to be the Spokesperson for the organisation in the province.
In 2002 re-elected by KwaZulu-Natal ANC Provincial Conference to be in the ANC Provincial Executive Committee. Subsequently elected by the PEC to serve in the Provincial Working Committee.

In 2004 re-elected as ANC Member of KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature. Subsequently appointed to be the Chief Whip of the Legislature and chaired the Multiparty Whips’Forum.
In 2005 re-elected by KwaZulu-Natal ANC Provincial Conference to be in the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC). Subsequently elected by the PEC to serve in the Provincial Working Committee.
In November 2006 appointed by the Premier of KZN to be the MEC (Provincial Minister) for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs.
Recently, after the 2009 Elections, elected to represent the ANC in the KZN Legislature and subsequently elected by the KZN Legislature to be its Deputy Speaker
